September 14, 2018by painter0

With summer dwindling and the crowds of tourists fading away, it may seem like New York City is getting ready to hibernate for another winter. Look a little closer, however, and you’ll discover a secret only the locals know.

Autumn in New York

No one lives here because they love the summer, it’s Autumn in New York that captures our hearts. Here’s a few tips on how to live your best fall in NYC.

Autumn in New York

1. Check out the harvest at the Brooklyn Grange

Fall is harvest time world round, and early Autumn in New York is no different. You might not realize it, but NYC has its own farmland, high above your head.

Come check out the rooftop farms of the Brooklyn Grange. For six years, this commercial urban farm has been suppling New Yorkers with fresh organic vegetables grown right here in NYC. Sign up for a tour, or try one of their incredible events. If you’re lucky, you might even find a spot at one of their specialty dinners.

2. Ride the MetroNorth

Just north of the city, Fall means foliage. Pick up a MetroNorth pass and wander the Hudson River. There are plenty of opportunities for apple and pumpkin picking, wine tasting tours, and cider sampling.

Don’t forget to visit the legendary Storm King Art Center, home to some of the most wonderful outdoor installations in the world. For a more haunting experience, consider the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze: 7,000 illuminated pumpkins lining the riverside landscape of Croton-on-Hudson.

3. Take a long walk in Central Park

While a few intrepid sunbathers may still be soaking up rays on the Great Lawn in October, for the most part, you’ll find Central Park a relaxed oasis for the next few months. Contemplate the changing seasons as the leaves turn vibrant reds and golds all around you.

Enjoy a Hot Chocolate as you meander the paths. Try the northern edge of the park to find a bit more solitude, or explore more of its unknown secrets. Autumn in New York is a time for quiet contemplation, and the park is the best place to get in touch with your inner New Yorker.

4. Sample some Seasonal Brews

It’s time to put down those watery summer beers and take a sip of headier brews. New York’s beer gardens are the perfect place to get a jump on Octoberfest.

The Bohemian Hall in Astoria is a perennial favorite for visitors and locals alike. Drink from mighty steins while sharing some of the best Czech cuisine in the city.

Of course, The Hall is just one of my fine options for this fall. Check out our list here.

5. Sample City Treats

From seafood to spirits, Autumn in New York is prime time for some of the best food festivals and thrilling bacchanals.

The pickle may not have been born in New York City, but it sure was perfected here. Check out the Lower East Side Pickle Day on September 25th. Sample the wares from over 20 different picklers. You can even submit your own creations to the first annual home-pickling/dancing contest.

If you possess a more refined palate, consider New York Oyster Week. Restaurants all over the city come together to celebrate the most divisive of shellfish. Try unique dishes from some of the best chefs in the city.
